BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — A Bend man was arrested Monday afternoon shortly after stealing an RV from an RV dealership that officers found half an hour later on Hunnell Road , police said.
Police responded at around 4:20 p.m. to the reported stolen motorhome at All Seasons RV & Marine on Northeast Jamison Street, police communications officer Sheila Miller said.
Officers learned the RV, stolen about 10 minutes before the call, had apparently been sold and was being readied for the new owner, Miller said. The dealership reported that the suspect had driven south from the business.
About half an hour later, police found the motorhome on Hunnell Road, where a large homeless encampment is located. A 41-year-old man exiting the vehicle was arrested without incident.
The motorhome was turned over to the dealership and the man was incarcerated in the Deschutes County Jail for first degree theft and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
A representative from All Seasons said the man had previously visited their grounds, looking at the RVs. The one he took was being prepared for sale and it happened to contain the keys.
“We keep all the keys…inside here, and they’re locked away,” trade adviser Justin Alvarez said. “And when you leave that property, you have to go through multiple people, past the store and everything. So it was kind of silly to think he could get away with something like that. And that’s why I think we were so quick to act on it.”
Alvarez said that before leaving the lot, the man asked a technician to clean the motorhome’s solar panels, which set off an alarm.
All Seasons also has security cameras that captured the entire event.
Dealership staff said the motorhome suffered no major damage.
