Two Bowker Motor Group Mini dealerships held their first events to support conservation and environmental improvements on the River Ribble and its associated tributaries.

Bowker Mini staff at Preston Docks and Trident Park in Blackburn have teamed up with customers to volunteer for Ribble Rivers Trust. It was the first time the dealers had collaborated with customers to work together on local conservation.

The Preston Bowker MINI Center event focused on clearing as much rubbish as possible on the River Ribble in Penwortham, Preston, to help free the river and banks of rubbish and plastic and prevent it from reaching the sea.

Blackburn’s Bowker Mini Center rushed to regroup along Bashall Brook near Bashall Eaves. Buckwheat bundles are used to protect the bank from further erosion. Beams are created from coppiced willows and act as natural barriers, dispersing the energy of the river water and providing habitat for fish and invertebrates.

Amy Lancaster-Hall, Bowker Group Marketing Manager, said: “Mini is built on Big Love, and we’re on a mission to make life brighter. Two little words with the power to inspire a world of change. Many of our staff and clients live locally and take advantage of the Lancashire countryside for their recreation and leisure activities. Ribble Rivers Trust has created two great events. We learned a lot about their mission and this is only the beginning of our volunteering with them.

Last month, the Bowker Mini Centers made their Big Love Pledge to make conservation improvements in the Ribble Watershed to benefit people, wildlife and the environment.

Jack Spees, Managing Director of Ribble Rivers Ribble Trust, said: “The staff and customers of Bowker Mini have made a huge difference by collecting rubbish and plastic at Penwortham and bringing it together at Bashall Eaves. It was the perfect mix of wide open spaces and meeting like-minded people; without forgetting to gain experience and learn new skills.

“The events we have created for Bowker Mini are a small but important part of the Trust’s work. With over 3,114 miles of rivers and streams in the watershed, there’s always plenty to do.

Bowker MINI’s volunteering commitment is part of a national initiative launched by Mini UK, called Big Love. Mini-retailers nationwide submitted a unique Big Love Pledge. Each commitment is an ongoing commitment to each retailer’s local community.

Earlier this year, Bowker Motor Group entered into a new automotive technical skills partnership with Preston College to boost the confidence of apprentices.
