A Bristol car dealership has agreed to sponsor two players of the city’s professional men’s basketball team, the Bristol Flyers.
Bristol North dealership Drive Motor Retail will sponsor forward Shane Walker and point guard Marcus Evans for the 2021/22 British Basketball League (BBL) season.
As part of the deal, the Patchway-based MG and Vauxhall dealer in South Gloucestershire will provide a promotional car for Mr Walker to use and promote the club in the region.
Drive has previously sponsored games and events for the Flyers, which is an affiliate club of Bristol Sport, a sports business group owned by Stephen Lansdown, co-founder of financial services firm Hargreaves Lansdown.
The new agreement marks the first year that two individual players on the team have been sponsored by Drive.
Drive Bristol North General Manager Michael Leatherbarrow said: âAt Drive we are passionate about supporting local sport because clubs like the Bristol Flyers give a lot back to the community and it is important that we help them continue this. job.
âWe are delighted to show our support for the Flyers and the partnership has grown stronger over the past few years. We wish Shane, Marcus and the team the best of luck for the coming season.
Mr Walker, who joined the Flyers this year after helping the London Lions win the BBL Trophy against the Plymouth Raiders in last season’s final, said he was “delighted” with the sponsorship deal.
Mr Walker said: âI am grateful to Michael and the team for providing the car, which has made life a lot better for me in Bristol and will promote the club throughout the city.
“It’s great to see big companies like Drive supporting British basketball and recognizing the value the Flyers bring to the local community.”
US player Mr. Evans signed his first professional contract with the Bristol Flyers in June after previously competing for the US college basketball team, the VCU Rams.
Drive Motor Retail is one of the UK’s largest privately-owned automotive distribution groups, with revenues of around £ 250million per year and over 700 staff employed in 18 dealerships across the country.
The company’s Bristol North location recently expanded to include an MG franchise alongside its Vauxhall showroom.
In addition to the Flyers, Bristol Sport, based at Ashton Gate Stadium, oversees the commercial, commercial and operational interests of Bristol City and Bristol City Women’s Football Club, as well as Bristol Bears Rugby Club and Bristol Bears Women.
In June, Bristol Sport submitted a planning request for a proposed 4,000-seat site next to Ashton Gate Stadium which could become the Flyers’ new home. The team are currently playing their home games in the SGS College Arena.
