Guwahati: A new QR code-based system for hassle-free issuance of Vehicle Registration (RC) Certificates and Driving Licenses has been introduced by the Assam Department of Transport.

Department of Transport Secretary Adil Khan said the new system has been introduced for issuing QR code-based registration certificates and driver’s license cards replacing the outdated smart card, which is in accordance with the notification of the Ministry of Road Transport. .

Khan said: “The new system being introduced will ensure that there will be no multiple visits to the District Transport Offices (DTO) office to submit documents, pay fees and collect the printed driving licence/RC. ”

He further informed that car dealerships are delegated registration powers by the Department of Transportation for the registration of transportation and other vehicles.

They can also print RCs when selling the vehicles to customers through Aadhaar authentication.

The new RC with built-in QR code will have additional security features, such as a guilloche pattern, micro line, watermark and hologram under the top layer.

He added that a person will no longer have to go to the DTO office to get a driver’s license if they have passed the driving test. Printing of these licenses will be done at centralized remote locations which will be mailed out within three to five days.

He added that the advantage of embossed driver’s license with QR code is that any traffic officer or law enforcement agency can easily check a cardholder’s background by scanning the QR code. Verification can be done with a mobile phone which would eliminate the risk of duplication.

Steps to print licenses through remote locations or points would also eliminate middlemen from the system.

While plastic or smart cards are still being printed, the Department of Transportation officer added that possession of such documents is not mandatory as the documents are now accessible through the “mParivahan and DigiLocker” apps. “.
