Sparshatt Truck & Van Ltd has opened applications for its apprenticeship program in Dartford, Sittingbourne, Ashford and Tonbridge, from January 2023.

Sparshat Truck & Van Ltd is a Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle dealership in Kent, servicing and maintaining Mercedes trucks and vans and supplying genuine Mercedes parts. They created the Sparshat Training Academy to train apprentices and put them on a career path working at the global Mercedes-Benz brand.

The program is part of a series of investments by Sparshatt Truck & Van, including a £200,000 van workshop at their Sittingbourne site, a state-of-the-art £330,000 body shop and a £2million investment at their Dartford site.

The three-year Sparshatt Truck and Van apprenticeship program provides a Tier 3 qualification in heavy vehicle servicing and maintenance, awarded by IMI (Automotive Industry Institute). After the third year, successful apprentices are trained to use their new skills in the workplace during an ‘improvement year’.

During their training, apprentices will work alongside a highly trained Mercedes-Benz technician to learn how to use the latest automotive technology with up-to-date tools and equipment. Apprentices will also be eligible for interest-free loans to help fund tools and toolkits, as well as a health cashback plan with access to wellness support through Simply Health and access to the cycle to work program. They are also entitled to 24 days of annual leave, plus public holidays, and have full access to the new in-house gym at the Dartford depot.

Harry Deverill, a former apprentice under the program and now a technical specialist for the trainee group, said:

“I absolutely loved my time at Sparshat Training Academy. It helped kick-start my career as a trainee pool technical specialist and gave me everything I needed to work in the industry.

It’s great to get paid to learn, and interest-free tool loans are great when you’re just starting out. Sparshat really does everything they can to help their apprentices and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to take this course.

I would definitely recommend the apprenticeship program to anyone considering getting into mechanics. You’re working with a world-renowned company and it’s really a great way to start your career.

The apprentice, Joey Savini, added:

“I really enjoy my time at Sparshat Truck & Van. I’m learning so much and I’m really glad I took the opportunity to learn here.

It’s really great to learn with Mercedes-Benz because it’s such a big international company. I know I’m learning from the best and that gives me the best possible start to my career. I feel more confident in myself and my future having this course under my belt. »

While apprentices learn, they will receive a weekly salary of £175 for a total of 40 hours per week. At the end of their three-year course, they will complete a final evaluation. If successful, they will then progress to an “Improvement Year” to achieve Mercedes-Benz Maintenance Level Qualification.

For January 2023, there are two opportunities available at Dartford, two opportunities at Sittingbourne, one at Ashford and one at Tonbridge.

Applications are open to anyone over the age of 17 with a Grade C (or new Grade 4) or above in GCSE English and Maths or an equivalent qualification. Successful candidates will demonstrate mechanical aptitude, an interest and enthusiasm for the commercial vehicle industry, an ability to work in an organized manner with attention to detail, and good communication skills.
