Bangalore: The alleged discrepancy in sales figures for Ola electric scooters worries the chairman of a national car dealership lobby.

According to Vinkesh Gulati, president of the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), Ola Electric claimed 10 million capacities at its factory in Tamil Nadu and 4,000 shipments of its electric scooters, but on Wednesday only 500 vehicles were actually sold. to customers. .

Many customers have lodged complaints with FADA – and Gulati personally – about significantly lower battery life, gaps in panels, or second-hand vehicles delivered to them.

The association is currently collecting complaints from customers it receives. He will write to Ola Electric first for a solution. If the company fails to come up with one, FADA will write to the Heavy Industries Department and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to reach an amicable solution for customers.

According to MoRTH’s VAHAN dashboard, which keeps vehicle registration data in real time, a total of 439 Ola Electric scooters were registered as of Thursday morning. This compares to the 4,000 shipments the company claimed to have made in December.

Varun Dubey, chief marketing officer of Ola Electric, said vehicle registration figures take time to be reflected on the government portal.

“Many states do not report (vehicle registration numbers) to VAHAN,” he said. “Like Telangana, the North East, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, to name a few. In addition, VAHAN does not consider temporary registration. Most states require temporary registration for one month, so there is a four week lag. ”

Dubey declined to comment on final delivery figures.

Ola Electric has drawn attention on social media for its scooters that do not match the claimed ARAI range of 180 km. Many users report a range of 135 km when fully charged. But Dubey said Ola’s scooters had the smallest variation from ARAI’s numbers against industry standards, which he said is 24%.

“Before you can sell your vehicle, you need to get ARAI certification and you can claim the range of electric vehicles or the mileage of gasoline vehicles only on that basis. Everyone markets the ARAI range and everyone has a variation in their mileage compared to their ARAI certification. It can reach 40%, ”he said. “My variation with ARAI is the lowest in the industry at only 24%. Everyone is at 35-40%.

ARAI is the abbreviation for Automotive Research Association of India, a leading automotive R&D center established by the domestic automotive industry with the Indian government.

Dubey also claimed that Ola Electric does not charge for vehicle registration. The central government has removed registration fees for electric vehicles, but this has not been notified in all states. Ola Electric clarified that it collects fees from customers only for state government charges, which vary from state to state.

“The registration fees we charge are in accordance with state government rules. Some state governments have waived these fees as per central notification, and in those states we don’t charge them, ”Dubey said. “As more states waive it, we will remove it once they issue the formal notice of waiver.”

Ola Electric is the first automobile company in India to sell direct to customers bypassing the middleman, a network of dealers. Tesla was one of the first companies in the world to sell directly to customers. This resulted in the spread of fake dealer forms online and Gulati said he knew of at least five dealers who lost money to impostors.

“Ola has a direct-to-consumer sales model and does not offer concessions. It’s an extremely well-known fact and a topic of intense discussion as a disruptive model, ”Dubey said. “We also make it clear on the front page of our website that we do not have dealers. Yet on top of that, as part of trademark protection, whenever someone reports it to us, we file a complaint with the police. ”
